Businessman Pacquiao; fan reactions

I was particularly impressed by Manny Pacquiao as a promoter when he plugged his official website by telling fans in the interview to visit mpboxing.com.
Since I am one of his millions of fans, I immediately checked it out and was quite impressed by the creator of the site.
With the site, aside from the useful information it gives to readers, fans can now order online authentic autographed posters or autobiographs for $125, his only official autobiography for $18.99, authentic gloves in either black, red or pink at $250 and t-shirts at $33.99.
These products, for sure, will become collector’s items through the years. Various sites have been made for Pacquiao fans but to prevent others from “exploiting” the popularity of the world champion, the marketing arm of MP Promotions has decided to make an official website.
Pacquiao has not only made himself a fine fighter but an astute businessman as well.

If you happen to be in Gen. Santos City, the Pacquiao family is an active business clan. They have a Phoenix Petroleum station, a Blu Gre coffee shop, a commercial complex in Brgy. Lagao and a convenience store, among others.
Rumors circulating say that the family bought an old hotel in Davao City.
That makes Mrs. Jinkee Pacquiao very busy these days.

I am sure the referee made you momentarily unhappy when he made the mandatory count on Pacquiao for being “knocked down”. But to viewers like Brgy. Una Boxing Program executive diretor Gene Rose Tecson, it was not a knockdown. “Definitely not! It was a push.”
Philippine Airlines vice-president for Mindanao, lawyer Domingo Duerme, agreed, saying “it was obvious. Tinulak lang siya ni Mosley.”
National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) executive labor arbiter Atty. Elbert Restauro called it “erroneous call by the referee!”.
Had Shane Mosley fought toe-to-toe with Pacquiao, the outcome of the fight would have been different.
But again, when you get hit by Pacman’s power punch–whose pain Shane felt in the third round–the best option is to survive by back-pedalling or dancing away from trouble.
If you noticed, Mosley was booed by frustrated fans in the later rounds.
Fortunately for Mr. Shame Mosley, Pacquiao’s leg cramps prevented him from finishing off the aging fighter.

Reports say that Macman’s next opponent will be Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez.
In 2004 they fought to a draw. Four years later, Manny won via a split-decision. A third fight set for November 12 sounds exciting to me.
Another estimated P1-billion income for Pacman coming up. After all he eats Mexicans for breakfast, hehehe. Sounds irresistible. Specially to Jinkee.
Davao City sports coordinator Cholo Elegino would love to see the Pacquiao-Marquez III. And to silence all the blah-blah-blah, Cholo hopes that Floyd Mayweather Jr. shapes up to fight our world champion. Period.

After knock down in 3rd, Mosley survives Pacman’s attack

Manny Pacquiao knocked down Shane Mosley in the third round.
After that, Mosley , unfortunately, has not engaged Manny as expected.
So the ring judges gave the fight to the Filipino world champion.
Duane Ford scored it 120-107, Dave Moretti had it 120-108 and Glenn Trowbridge saw it 119-108 for a unanimous decision and Pacman retained his WBO welterweight title.
The fans booed Mosley for not fighting in the late rounds.
He was just too happy to survive.
And he did survive.
Pacquiao reportedly earned $20 million and Mosley had an income of $5 million.
For Mosley to survive the 12-round fight for $5 million was not too bad at all.

Summer treat; Manny

Last week, several events of the Davao Summerfest started and we are very glad that there are still more sports activities lined-up this month.
The Davao Football Association is hosting the Philippine Football Federation-Smart Communications Mindanao Championship on May 4 to 6 at the Tionko field and by May 7 to 8, the Daba Dabaw Ultimate Frisbee Tournament will also be played at the same venue.
On May 8, three events are scheduled.
First, you have to wake up early to witness the “Run to Reduce” Marathon organized by the Aboitiz Group of Companies starting at 5:30 a.m. on Roxas Avenue. Then, that you can get the chance to watch the Philippine Autocross Championship Series Round 2 at Speed City, Davao Riverfront or you may opt to watch the National Youth Judo Championships at the Gaisano Mall of Davao.
Comes May 14 to 15, another soccer even,t dubbed the “1st Davao City Host Lions Club Football Festival”, will be at the Tionko field. Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club hosts the 6th Pomelo Tee on May 20 to 22.
Finally, we will have the Eco City Celebrity Adventure Race on May 28 to 29.
This is indeed a summer sports treat!

Eight weight division champion Manny Pacquiao is favored to win against Shane Mosley on May 7 (May 8 in Davao) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Our survey said that 48.78% of the voters believe that Manny will win in the later rounds while 29.27% predict that a knockout will happen in the early rounds and 21.95% see no knockout victory for the Sarangani province congressman.
For Mosley and his team, they would love to beat our champion and avoid being in the list of Manny’s victims like Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar dela Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.
But for Manny, a defeat is not an option, or else, he would, for sure, make his Nanay Dionisia very sad and break the hearts of the millions of Filipino fans.
You see, in the face of all the problems, man-made and natural, confronting Filipinos, a win by Manny has always been the best gift that he can give his countrymen.
Manny is no longer into boxing to feed himself and his family.
He is now fighting to make his countrymen very, very happy even for just a day.

Top 10

Definitely, Manny Pacquiao’s over Antonio Margarito was the top sports story for 2010.
Ask any Pinoy and he can talk to you about the Pacman’s string of victories and how his fights united his countrymen.
At No.2 is the historic gold medal performance of Rey Saludar in the Guangzhou Asian Games.
In terms of impact, of course, the Pacquiao winning moments top them all as he set a record 8th boxing title.
What made Saludar’s victory more interesting was the fact that the gold medal win was worth P4 million in the bank for him.
Whew! That can be life changing for the amateur boxing champion.
Saludar, a private first class in the Army, however, has opted to remain in the service rather than turn professional and follow the footsteps of billionaire Pacquiao.

Topping also our Top 10 list at No.3 was the semifinal appearance of the Azkals, the Philippine national football team in the Asean Football Federation-Suzuki Cup tournament.
Unfortunately, we are not a football-loving country unlike our closest neighbors Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei where football is like a religion, so we don’t have a very strong following of the sport unlike basketball.
Pinoys love the NBA, the PBA and even barangay tournaments played on the streets.
But I hope with the recent performance of the football team and under a new leadership in the Philippine Football Federation, there will be a better strategy to bring back football to far-flung areas to get people involved again in a sport that we can excel in internationally.
Forget basketball, believe me, we have been trying and trying in the world stage but failed.
Let’s face it, basketball as a sport is all for recreation, physical fitness and building friendships.

At No.4 is Steve “Red Knight” Grandeza of Team Pilipinas Phoenix Fuels Moo Duk Kwan who annexed the World Kickboxing Federation K1 super welterweight crown last October 1 in Dubai.
Grandeza was supposed to fight last December 10 against Najmeddin “The Scorpion” Al-Hadad but the former champion chickened out.

Lee Van Corteza is our No.5 in the list after emerging No.2 in the World Pool-Billiard Association.
Corteza, who lives in Mintal (Davao City), ruled the Predator Sweet 16 and U.S.Open 10-Ball this year.
* * *
At No.6 is Oliver Dimakiling’s Penang Heritage City Chess Open title victory in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The International Master from Davao went to Singapore to work as a chess teacher, then, during breaks, continues to compete.
* * *
At No.7 is the entry of Renzar Henry Asilum of Holy Child High School and Karlo Lino Aranjuez of Stella Maris Academy in the Jr.NBA Philippines All-Star Team.
Aranjuez also won the Mitsubishi Sportsmanship Award.
* * *
No.8 is the victory of the Apo Golf and Country Club in the 63rd Philippine Airlines (PAL) last March in Bacolod.
The Apo Club won the senior’s crown that ended a 17-year title drought.
* * *
At No.9 is the story of Frankie Minoza of Bukidnon.
For the first time, a Filipino will be competing in the 2011 Champion’s Tour.
He made it after finishing second in the Champion’s Tour qualifying school in November.

Sharing the No.10 spot are the victory of the Ateneo de Davao University in the 2010 Jesuit Invitational Games (JIG) at the Ateneo de Manila University and the second place win of the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club in the Sta.Lucia Tour.
The Blue Knights swept all their games by beating host Ateneo de Manila, Ateneo de Naga, Ateneo de Iloilo and Xavier University while Rancho Palos Club was leading early in the tournament but bogged down a little bit in the next two legs to finish a respectable second place.

Italian-American radio host must apologize to Pacman, Filipino people

In the beginning, Adam made a mistake.
He must be riding a wrong “Carolla” sedan.
From route A to Z, he took the wrong road.
It is wrong for Adam, an Italian-American radio host, to call world boxing champion Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao “illiterate” and his beloved country, the Philippines “a nation of whores”.
Adam should apologize to Emmanuel and to the Filipino people.
I hope Top Rank’s Bob Arum should make this a top priority.
Davao City’s adopted son, despite all his “weaknesses”, must never be treated this way:

6:00PM Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware vs. MP Warriors-GenSan

DAVAO CITY – Valuable playoff position in the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference is at stake on Tuesday night, November 13, when the Goldstar Hardware-backed Duterte Agilas-Davao hosts the MP Warriors-GenSan at the Almendras Gym starting at 6:00PM.

Only two games separate Tuesday night’s protagonists, with the Warriors of boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao leading the Mindanao Division with a 3-4 win-loss card.  The Agilas are at 1-6 while idle Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno is a game ahead of them at 2-5.  MisOr was playing Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu at press time last night at the Xavier University Gym.

Buoyed by tallying their first ever MVBA franchise win in their last outing against Arthro, 85-83, the Agilas now aim for their first winning streak.  Against Arthro, Coach Rhoel Josol drew great games from scoring machines Fred Sampilo, Bob Cozy Ilanga and Jonjon Gonzaga while burly Boboy Berami combined with twin towers James Razon and Joel Solis in dominating the inside on both ends of the floor.

On the other hand, MisOr is recovering from its recent road trip of the Visayas Division that ended last Wednesday (November 7) where they lost all three games.  Expect Coach Bong Abad to try new combinations with big men Frank Nailon and Randy Sevilla and guards Ramil Tagupa and Rocky Sanchez who were all revelations in the said trip.  Team leaders Lowell Briones and Anton Villoria will continue to assert their veteran presence.  Another key for MisOr is the health of leading scorer Nathaniel Cruz, who sat out two of their last three road games due to a back injury.

All three Mindanao Division squads are expected to give it their all in the final week of the 30-game classification stage.  The balance of the schedule involves the three teams playing amongst themselves so a single win can greatly alter the rankings.

The top teams in each division will earn a bye into the best-of-three division finals. The remaining two teams will slug it out in a separate best-of-three wildcard series with the winner advancing to the division finals.  The Visayas and Mindanao Division champions will meet in another best-of-three affair for the championship of the tournament sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

This early, the Visayas Division picture is clear with M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City getting the outright division finals berth.  Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue finished with the same record as M. Lhuillier but lost in the tiebreak thus setting a date with Arthro in the Visayas Division wildcard round starting on November 16 at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center.(Anthony Servinio)
