Pacquiao Asian Cup chess starts May 18

THE $100,000 Manny Pacquiao Cup Asian Continental Open and Women’s Chess Championships will be held May 18 to 26 at the Midas Hotel in Pasay City with the region’s top players expected to join.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines president Prospero Pichay Jr. made the announcement yesterday as he lauded Pacquiao for sponsoring the tournament held under the auspices of the NCFP, Asian Chess Federation and Fide, and organized by the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation.
“Congressman Pacquiao epitomizes the ideal of a sound mind in a sound body,” said Pichay. “He is an avid chess player and will give many Filipinos the chance to participate and see top grandmasters in action. We expect the best players from all over Asia to join and we will show once again how strong Phiippine chess is.”
The top five in the Open division qualify for the World Cup scheduled this August in Tromso, Norway, while the Women’s champion advances to the 2014 Women’s World Championship.
Thus far, only Grandmasters Oliver Barbosa and Wesley So have advanced among Filipino players.
Barbosa finished in the top five in last year’s Asian Continental in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, while So, the country’s top player, booked his ticket in the Zonal Championship organized by Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino last January in Tagaytay City.
The Asian Continental will be a 9-round Swiss system with games scheduled daily.
This is the fourth time for the Philippines to host the event. Previous editions were held in Cebu City in 2007 and Subic Bay in 2009 and 2010.
Asian Chess Federation president Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifah Al Nahyan will be the guest of honor during the opening rites.
Concurrent with the championship will be a FIDE Trainers Seminar from 20-24 May, organized by the Florencio Campomanes Chess Academy under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and conducted by FIDE Trainers Commission Secretary GM Efstratios Grivas of Greece and Torre, Asia’s first GM who became Southeast Asia’s first Fide Senior trainer recently.
For details, players may call Pat Lee at 0927-7209260 or e-mail Seminar inquiries may be made with Elias Lao at 09262378876.(pr)

Shell Active Chess: Cagayan de Oro swing on Sept.11-12 Davao leg on Sept.25-26 at SM City Davao

The continuing search for future chess stars resumed when the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship (Shell Active Chess), the nation’s longest running, grassroots-based chess tournament, kicked off its 2010 season last June 26-27 with an expanded series, guaranteeing another banner year for the sport and exposure for the country’s leading and rising players.
The Organizer, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, has added another leg in Mindanao to accommodate the big number of players from the 20-and-under and 14-and-under age groups in the region, making it an eight-stage circuit, spread over the key cities in the country, culminating in the grand finals in Manila in October.
Registration is with a fee pegged at Php 50. For details, contact the following coordinators: Alex Dinoy at 0922-8288510 or 0916-6882682, or the local coordinators Mariano Cabugos at (078) 844-0513 -Tuguegarao; Joselito Castro at (043) 723-2568 or (043) 723-4246 – Batangas; NM Glenn Artuz at 0918-5051825 or (054) 4750623 – Naga; Odilon Badilles at 0905-597 8096 -Cebu; NM Cesar Mariano at 0919-2833826 or (033) 336-6205 – Iloilo; and, NA Ronnie Tabudlong 0929-2407371 or (082) 300-4260 – Davao. Registration forms are also available at selected schools, chess clubs and municipal/provincial government offices. You may also log on to
Deadline for list up is one week before the tournament date for both participants within the city and from out-of-towns. However, registration ends when the maximum number of 500 is reached even before the given deadline.
Shell Active Chess kicked off last month when Pilipinas Shell, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), staged the second “An Interaction with the Masters” or AIM wherein 200 participants, including students teachers, coaches, principals, and parents from various public elementary and high schools in Luzon, took part in the clinic conducted by Shell Active Chess graduates International Masters Idel Datu and Oliver Dimakiling, Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, and International Arbiter Rolly Yutuc.
AIM was in line with the DepEd’s Memorandum No. 1, 2009, which integrates chess into the school curriculum as a way of strengthening the development of higher order thinking skills and values among children enrolled in Grade III-VI and the secondary level as part of Physical Education.
Pilipinas Shell Sustainable Development Manager Ronald Suarez, in his welcome remarks, encouraged school administrators to strengthen their support for young chess players by putting up chess clubs in their respective schools. ”Through the Shell Active Chess programme, which we have been holding annually for 18 years now as part of the company’s commitment to Sustainable Development,  Pilipinas Shell has helped nurture the skill and talent of the Filipino youth. We also hope that through this programme, we can help our country’s youth inculcate the values that this sport cultivates,” adds Mr. Suarez.
This year’s Shell Active Chess circuit kicked off June 26-27 for the NCR leg at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong with the second stage held last July 3-4 for the Northern Luzon stage in Tuguegarao. The third leg was July 17-18 for the Southern Luzon elims in Batangas while Naga City hosted  the fourth leg for the Southern Luzon qualifier last July 31-Aug. 1.
Iloilo took its turn last  Aug. 14-15 for the Western Visayas leg while Cebu held the Central Visayas stage last Aug. 28-29.
The seventh leg will be held Sept. 11-12 in Cagayan de Oro before the circuit winds up on Sept. 25-26 for the Mindanao leg in Davao.
The top three finishers in all legs will advance to the grand finals slated Oct. 23-24 at SM Megamall. Each leg will be an eight-round Swiss system event for the juniors and nine-round for the kiddies. The grand finals will be a nine-round tournament for both divisions.
Sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, Shell Active Chess is backed by Shell V-Power, Shellane, Shell Helix, and McDonald’s, in partnership with SM Supermalls, Cagayan Colleges Tuguegarao, Central Philippine University Iloilo, University of San Carlos Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro City Tourism.(pr)
