Iloilo sweeps Little League Softball elims

Iloilo outlasted ILLAM in extra inning, 5-4, to sweep the elimination round and lead the march of semifinalists in the Little League Softball division of the Little League Philippines Series 2013 yesterday.

Jaimalyn Joy Ambong pounced on a costly passed ball by ILLAM to reach the plate in the seventh as the Ilonggo girls completed their fightback from 1-4 to secure their fifth straight triumph and take the No. 1 spot going into today’s semis.
Unbeaten Iloilo will face the fourth-ranked team in the knockout Last 4 phase slated at 8 a.m. in the fields of Barangay Altura, its eyes fixed on the the championship game scheduled later at 2 p.m.
Despite the loss, ILLAM finished as the No. 2 semifinalist with a 4-1 card, and can still challenge for the Phl Series crown by hurdling the No. 3 squad. Cavite (2-2) looked headed to secure the third spot while Zambales (1-3) and Quezon City (1-3) were disputing the last berth at presstime.
Also bringing out the broom in their side of the competition was Muntinlupa, which finished with a 4-0 mark in Junior Softball League play.
The Muntinlupa softbelles tripped ILLAM, 7-5, to rule Group A and formalize their entry into the crossover semis against the No. 2 team in Group B. The second spot in Group A and the top two in Group B were still being contested yesterday afternoon.
World Series Big League Softball titlist Manila South hardly broke out a sweat in trampling Naga, 13-0, for their fourth straight win that sent them back to the Philippine Series finals with two games to spare.
The Manilans are expected to face Pasig (3-1 with still two games left) in the winner-take all finale set tomorrow.
In Senior League Softball in Barangay Natatas, GK Smokey Mountain leaned on its batting prowess and the one-hitter of Lovely Joy Redaja in blanking Caloocan, 14-0, to hike its record to 4-1 and boost its shot at the championship round.

Muntinlupa gained from Tana Monk and Nikola Lacson’s RBI in the last inning to hammer out a come-from-behind 8-7 win over defending champion Tarlac City.(pr)
