Monica Arianne Rivera and Sean Chan fended off their respective rivals to capture the 19-Under crowns while Geero Pelegrina and Nicolette Santiago took the U-9 titles in the PBA Ming Ramos Victor Youth Non-Ranking Championships at Jump Smash Badminton Court in St. San Francisco Del Monte, QC last Sunday.
Rivera, of Team JB/Lining Academy, held off a rallying Alizandra Candelaria of Allied-Victor, 21-18, 21-16, to bag the ladies plum while Chan of Team Prima frustrated Glenn Remo of ETC, 21-16, 21-17, to annex the men’s diadem in the premier class of the event held in honor of Philippine Badminton Association honorary chairperson and former First Lady Mrs. Amelita “Ming” Ramos and held as part of PBA’s Bagong Bida Grassroots Program.
Rivera later made it two-in-row by taking the girls’ U-17 singles crown with a 21-10, 21-17 victory over Mikaela Aquino with Carl Clemente of Allied Victor bagging the boys’ diadem with a walkover win over Henrick Peralta.
Mrs. Ramos also graced the awards rites along with PBA’s Bagong Bida Grassroots Program head Police Gen. Federico Laciste Jr. and Conrado Co.
Pelegrina, of The Grip Shuttle Bulacan/Babolat Academy, outplayed Emmanuel Rodriguez of New Era in the decider and carved out a 21-14, 11-21, 21-10 victory to cop the crown in the youngest category of the tournament backed by Victor, official equipment sponsor of the PBA and exclusive distributed by PCOME Industrial Sales, Inc.
Santiago, of Babolat, dominated Nicole Benito, 21-6, 21-6, to cop the girls title in the event sanctioned by the PBA headed by Vice President Jejomar Binay, chair Manny V. Pangilinan and sec-gen Rep. Albee Benitez.
Meanwhile, PBA’s Bagong Bida Grassroots Program head Police Gen. Federico Laciste Jr. said that a series of regional grassroots tournaments will be conducted in different regions to enable players in the countryside to get a feel of tournament play with Mon Padiz of Sta. Rosa Badminton Center in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, hosting the next PBA Bagong Bida SRBC Youth non-ranking age-grouper on Feb. 1-3, 2013.
Jewel Albo and Olive Sanvictores, both of Lining, defeated Kervin Llanes of Tuguegarao, 21-9, 21-6, and Andrea Masakayan, 21-12, 21-8, respectively, to capture the U-11 crowns while Joshua Morada of JLTC Team and Meghan Cruz of Babolat took the U-13 plums with 17-21, 21-14, 21-10 and 21-14, 21-15 victories over Adrian Ramirez and Joy de Guzman, respectively.
Johnrick Macabenta of Christ The King School-Muntinlupa thwarted Glenn Camillo, 21-18, 21-17, while Charmaine Salvador of Allied Victor downed Pauline Santos, 21-10, 21-9, to annex the U-15 crowns.(pr)
