Anthony Nerza and Mona Liza Ambasa finished strongest in the Kadayawan Phoenix Run last Sunday, August 21, 2011 at SM City Davao. Nerza clocked in 1:52:00 in the 32K category while Ambasa led by just two seconds (2:33:51) over 2nd placer Judielyn Miranda in the female race. Following Nerza in the men’s race were Joselito Dugos (1:54:00) and Angelito Sibayan (1:58:00). Cynthia Jaro (2:34:03) came in third among the women.
Thousands of runners joined the Kadayawan Phoenix Run organized by Phoenix Petroleum Philippines. The Run dubbed as “Takbo Para Sa KinaBOOKasan,” was for the benefit of six schools that were hit hard by the recent flash flood in Davao: Matina Central Elem.School, Mabini Elementary School, Don Manuel Gutierrez Sr. Elem. School, Doña Soledad Dolor Elem. School, Davao City SpecialSchool (SPED-Bangkal) and Matina Pangi Elem. School.
The Run was also a tribute to Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. and his ideals of freedom and love of country.
In the 16K leg among the men, Arnie Macaneras (56:48) edged out Gilbert Maluyo (57:01) and James Castillo (57:29) to take the win. Among the women, April Diaz (1:11:00) led by a minute over Criselyn Jaro (1:12:00). Vivian Avergonzado (1:18:00) took the third spot.
The 8K was a close battle in both men’s and women’s races. Sonny Wagdos (27:34) was a minute earlier than Michael Constantino (28:36), who came seconds earlier than third placer Michael Barrosa (28:50). Among the women, Evangeline Villanueva (34:44) crossed the finished line just 8 seconds before Meezel Cabreros (34:52). Elizabeth Villanueva followed close at 35:28.
The 4K was a competitive race for children 12 years old and under. Joebert Maluyo led the boys at 17:02, while Kecir Abrigon (17:16) and Marlon Moralde (17:31) gave him a tough challenge. Lara Gayamara (18:00) came first among the girls, followed by Claren Dojo (19:00) and Marianne Dojo (20:43).
