Hope Christian High School pulled off a pair of cliffhangers to tie defending champion University of St. La Salle-Bacolod’s 3-0 mark in the in the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League Tournament of Champions at the USLS gym in Bacolod last Tuesday.
The NCR regional champions outsteadied the gritty Central Philippine University tossers in a down-to-the-wire duel, 21-25, 25-12, 24-26, 25-22, 15-13 victory then thwarted Cebu regional winner Pajo National High School, 25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, to remain unbeaten in three games.
Hope CHS, which repulsed Davao National High School, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18, in the opener of the four-day championship among the regional winners last Monday, thus matched the host’s strong start in the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s.
USLS, which swept its first two matches against Pajo NHS and CPU, posted its third straight three-set victory, beating Tacloban regional winner Ormoc National High School, 25-13, 25-14, 25-18, as it firmed up its title retention bid in the league backed by LBC, Toby’s Sports, Mikasa, Asics and Metro Sports, headed by Freddie Infante, with Johanz Buenvenida as tournament director.
Central Phil. U, meanwhile, notched its first victory in three games as it subdued Davao National High School, 26-24, 15-25, 25-21, 25-14, in the other contest.
Five matches were being played at presstime with Hope CHS and USLS tipped to arrange a showdown for the crown in the eighth season of the annual tournament featuring the country’s leading junior players and rising stars.
Pajo NHS and CPU share third place with 1-2 slates while Ormoc NHS and Davao City National High School remain winless in two starts. The finals is set at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday after the 2 p.m. battle for third.PR
