Nonato outsprints Berjame in 1st Stage of Race for Peace, Mayor Duterte urges riders to champion peace

Nonato outsprints Berjame in 1st Stage of Race for Peace, Mayor Duterte urges riders to champion peace

In an initial display of raw nerve and courage, perennial cycling winner Dexter Nonato of Team Davao A (Inday Sara Team ) succeeded in defeating this year’s Padjak 4th Stage winner Jack Lloyd Berjame of the Davao Team B (University of Mindanao) in the first stage of the country’s newest road racing competition.

Like couples undivided by distractions, the duo commenced riding from the Rizal Park side-by-side in the peloton that saw action in  the early stage.

However, they both managed to break away from the main pack at the tracks of Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur together with Jay Ian Leduna of Team Lanao del Norte.

The trio started the difficult path of Baluyan in Davao del Sur marked by zigzag road.

From there, both Nonato and Berjame decided to leave Leduna behind in order to fight for the right to claim the title ‘Eagle of the Mountain’ as well as the top prize as Stage One Winner pocketing the cash pot of P 3,000.00 for Nonato and the P 2,000.00 for Berjame.

Third place however went to Melchor Labaya, Jr. of Team Davao A (Inday Sara Team) with the prize of P 1,000.00.

Nonato clocked 3 hours 52 minutes and 50.822 seconds, Berjame clocked 3 hours 53 minutes and 00.822 seconds while Labaya garnered a record of 3 hours 56 minutes and 06.131 seconds.

The Davao-General Santos track serves as the opening salvo of the first-ever intra-regional road riding competition designed by organizers to also serve as advocacy medium for the promotion of peace in Mindanao.

Earlier in the day, City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in a message read for him by First District Councilor Edgar Ibuyan exhorted the 72 cyclists from the 12 participating teams from various areas in Mindanao to work for the promotion of peace thru sports even as he lauded race organizers lead by RMN Networks for helping create a fertile environment conducive to the discovery of new sporting talents to tower in the country’s sporting map in the future.

Mario Solis, Station Manager of RMN DXDC Davao and head of the organizing Executive Committee (ExeCom) challenged the public to rally behind the 72 brave riders for showing the way in this rare advocacy campaign designed to raise public interest and morale on the urgency of peace in our time.

Also during the Send-off Gathering, Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Pedro Tango read the Race for Peace Statement in behalf of the riders, organizers, peace advocates and other supporters.

“Today we ride in the name of friendship, brotherhood and understanding, challenging the nation to ride for hope, peace and prosperity,” the message also reads.

The Davao-Gensan stage took the riders 153 kilometer hurdle.

Tomorrow, riders will tackle the tournament’s second stage from General Santos City to the City of Koronadal in a 130 kilometer plain road challenge that will try to test whether Nonato, who will be wearing tomorrow’s green jersey as symbol of being the current stage winner can still master the new track against all other cyclists entered in the race.
