UM trounces HCDC, 96-76 in Inter-Faculty/Employee basketball finals

University of Mindanao trounced the Holy Cross of Davao College, 96-76 to win the 2008 Inter-Faculty/Employee Basketball Tournament, Sunday, at the Holy Cross of Davao College gym.

Ateneo de Davao University landed third place after outgunning the University of the Immaculate Conception, 79-74.

In the guest team division, the General Services Office-City Treasurer’s Office defeated the Philippine Sports Commission, 79-74.

PSC chairman Butch Ramirez, who played for the PSC team, said the tournament gave them a chance again to exercise and hopefully stay exercising for them to keep in shape.

Jonel Avendano and Jong de Lara won the three-point shooting contest for the GSO-CTO team led by City Treasurer Rodrigo Riola and General Services Officer Marvin Melodias.


Team Inday Sara, Nonato shine in Pahalipay bikefest

Team Inday Sara avenged its loss in the Kadayawan race by ruling the 2008 Pahalipay ni Mayor Rody Duterte sa Pasko Sportsfest’s biking competition, Sunday, in Brgy.Catalunan Grande.

The champions clocked four hours and 49 minutes to beat Davao Basic System Manpower which crossed the finish line in four hours, 54 minutes and 16 seconds.

Team Kambras followed at third place in 4:54:17.

Dexter Nonato of Inday Sara won the individual category over Glen Ibanez of University of Mindanao and third placer Marcial Catangue of Davao Basic System Manpower.

Marvin Aleonar shared the limelight when he dominated the 20 years old and under for UM while Jersan Sumaco of Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative followed at second place and Junald Guebernas of Davao Basic setted for the third spot.

Danny Tapao of Inday Sara clinched the veteran’s title by outracing Denny Samaniego of Davao Basic. Dominic Carpio of UM wound up at third place.

PhilCycling regional director Salvador Paholio Jr. thanked Mayor Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte for the support extended to the cycling community in Davao.

“We are very happy that they have not stopped supporting cycling. Our riders always look forward to their events,” said Paholio.

PBA statement on Cruz, Baguio trade

Commissioner Sonny Barrios met with PBA Vice-Chairman Angelito Alvarez and Red Bull Governor Tony Chua at the PBA Office to clarify the trade involving Red Bull’s Celino Cruz and Cyrus Baguio in exchange for Air21’s 2011 and 2012 1st round draft picks.

After the assurances from both Alvarez and Chua that the both teams will positively address the Commissioner’s concerns and will continue to uphold the league’s rules and regulations, particularly those pertaining to the Team Salary Cap, the trade was approved accordingly.

Moralde leads gold medalists in RRD-SZD Pahalipay boxing tourney

John Vincent Moralde of NHA-Buhangin won the gold medal by besting Arnel Agustin in the 45-kilogram finals of the 2008 Pahalipay ni Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Z. Duterte sa Pasko Boxing Tournament, Saturday, December 27, at the City Hall Drive.

Harvesting gold medals too were Glen Ramos of Quirino who defeated Yancy Uyanguren of Boulevard in the 46-kilogram finals and Vincent Diez of Bucana stopped Almer Santiago in the 40-kilogram championship.

But getting a sleek, sexy stomach is easier than you think. Spend just five minutes a day on toning your abs and you’ll get an amazing middle.

We rounded up five of the most effective tummy toners around. Work three or four of these exercises into your routine (easing them in will minimize soreness). Do the number of reps indicated, resting one minute between moves. The only equipment you will need is a hand towel. Washboard abs, here you come!

Pike 90
Lie faceup; raise legs until perpendicular to floor, feet flexed. Lower right leg so it hovers 1 or 2 inches off floor and place hands lightly behind head. In this position, do 15 crunches, lifting chest toward ceiling and lowering. Switch legs and repeat.

Crunchy frog
Sit with knees bent, feet flat. Keeping legs together, raise feet several inches and bring knees toward chest. Wrap arms around knees without touching legs. Extend legs and stretch arms to sides, palms forward. Return to wrapped-arm position; repeat. Do 15 reps.

Stand with feet hip-width apart, right leg in front of left, right foot turned out. Bend elbows and raise arms out to sides at shoulder level (like goalposts). In one motion, raise right knee to lowered right elbow. Return to start; switch sides and repeat to complete one rep. Do 15 reps.

Lie faceup. Press legs together and raise them toward ceiling until they’re at a 90-degree angle, with knees slightly bent and toes pointed. Raise butt and legs off floor using ab muscles; twist legs slightly to left. Repeat, twisting to right, for one rep. Do 15 reps.

Side arm balance
Start on floor on knees. Lean to left and place left hand on floor under shoulder; extend right arm up and to left, palm down. Straighten right legs out to right with foot on floor, resting on left knee. Hold for 5 breaths. Return to start; switch sides. Repeat twice per side.

Pahalipay ni RRD-SZD softball, boxing, chess on Dec.27

Softball resumes at the Mintal Elementary School, boxing will be at the City Hall Drive and chess at the Gaisano South Citimall-Ilustre which are part of the 2008 Pahalipay ni Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Z. Duterte sa Pasko Sportsfest on Saturday, December 27.

Davao City Water District meets Mntal at 8 a.m., the Matina Boys against Toril at 10 a.m., Tagum versus Digos City at 1:30 p.m. and University of Mindanao faces Tugbok at 3 p.m.

Boxing starts at 3 p.m. while chess checks in at 10 a.m.

Cycling competition takes place on December 28 starting at 8 a.m. at the Catalunan Grande Barangay Hall while arnis gets going on December 29 and dancesport on December 30 at the SM City Davao.

“These are the final events that will be played and we thank the athletes for participating also in our other events,” said Christopher “Bong” Go, the mayor’s executive assistant.

Athletics, billiards, bowling, dama, football, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, table tennis and triathlon were the other events played this month with participants also coming from outside of Davao City.

Holy Cross of Davao College battles University of the Immaculate Conception in the crossover semifinals of the 2008 Inter-Faculty/Employee Basketball Tournament on Saturday, December 27, at the Holy Cross of Davao College gym.

Game time is at 8 a.m.

Ateneo de Davao University plays University of Mindanao at 9:30 a.m. for the other semis game with the winners advancing to the championship on December 28 at 11 a.m. after the 8 a.m. battle for third place.

Philippine Sports Commission and fellow guest team General Services Office-City Treasurer’s Office will play a “championship” game at 9:30 a.m.

PSC chairman William “Butch” Ramirez is expected to see action against the GSO-CTO squad led by his former varsity player Atty.Marvin “Oying” Melodias, Davao City’s general services officer and City Treasurer Rodrigo “Ojek” Riola.
