OZAMIZ CITY BPI manager Rey C. Urbiztondo trounced businessman Roy Roa of Oroquieta City in the fifth and final round and emerged over-all champion in the just concluded Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) Sinulog Individual Blitz Chess Championship last Saturday at Deep Blue in SM City, Cebu , as part of the Sinulog celebration.
Playing Black, Region 10 NCFP Coordinator Urbiztondo, prevailed after 28 moves of a Sicilian Defense-Maroczy Variation and finished with four wins and a draw in five outings.
Earlier, Urbiztondo toppled Atty. Jong Melendez, businessman Bong San Pascual, Engr. Jun Olis – all from Cebu City and had a draw with Engineer Rocky Rocamora before beating Roa in the final round.
In the team match, Urbiztondo defeated exporter and engineer NM Ben Dimaano of CEPCA/Cebu in the top board encounter, but not enough to power Northern Mindanao Chess Team. Losing to the host city, Cebu with a 15-9 count. Team mate Dr. Reynaldo Feliciano took the board 2 title with 2-0 wins. CEPCA scorers were: Miguel Banibane, Zaldy Tabanao, Rene Casia and Mandy Baria.
Urbiztondo is a former second placer in the tough 1983 Cebu All Students Chess Championships after falling short to International Master Enrico Sevillano. He was a gold medal winner in the defunct Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA) in 1984 representing Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT). He was also a former champion of Surigao and Misamis Occidental and a member of the multi-titled Far East Bank chess team.(PR)
